Building Future Leadership of Family Foundations

As wealth continues to transfer from one generation to another, younger generations need to become more actively involved in their family’s foundation Shirley Welk Fredricks and her family’s Lawrence Welk Family Foundation have been pioneers in structuring and growing multigenerational leadership - including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jan Kern and her Family Foundation Information Exchange groups, based at Southern California Grantmakers, has been a pioneer in bringing together family foundations leaders to share with and help each other with the challenges of leadership and operations. This free workshop, offered to San Fernando Valley family foundations, will feature these two leaders in conversation with Dr. Thomas Backer, who has studied philanthropy (including a year-long study of FFIX commission by the Annie E. Casey Foundation) for more than 30 years. Read more

The Health and Human Service Nonprofit Executive Directors Roundtable brings together health and human service nonprofit CEOs and senior staff in the San Fernando Valley for informal discussion of important topics and peer-to-peer networking, as well as guest speakers. In addition to networking and informal problem-solving discussion, a section of this meeting will include a discussion about the future of the Roundtable - do we want to continue these meetings? Quarterly or on some other schedule? What format works best? The Roundtable is coordinated by VNR, Valley Care Community Consortium and The Children's Burn Foundation. Read more

Two lectures with discussion following will be given at an upcoming meeting of the Valley Providers Collaborative. CSUN Professor Lauren Willner will discuss the concept of “managerialism” and her study of how middle managers in nonprofit social justice agencies deal with their managerial responsibilities. And CSUN Professor Allen Lipscomb will discuss his study of how mentoring can benefit African American Male Social Workers in Valley nonprofits. Read more
