Meet The NASA Engineer Fighting For His Uighur Homeland In China

By the time he came to study at Cal State Northridge in 1988, Sidick was already a poster boy for Uighur education back home. He launched a voluntary consulting service, helping other Uighurs figure out how to come to the U.S. to study. Sidick built up a following back home, writing online articles in the Uighur language about topics such as child care and goal setting. -- LAIst

Recently I’ve heard story after story not just about how hard this time has been for each of us, but, surprisingly, how many of us are engaging in acts of kindness toward others. It seems, especially in trying times, we find helping others can be a great way to feel better ourselves. Friends are sharing recipes, neighbors are sharing supplies, and many of us now live for that regular zoom meeting with family and friends when we can support each other. Read more

Alexander: New commissioner will try to polish Big West’s basketball reputation

To get that done – and Big West teams have won a game in the tournament only five times in the past 20 years, and never more than one per tournament – a lot of the work will have to be done during the season. This past season, Irvine was No. 114 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, and after that the falloff was fairly steep: UC Santa Barbara 177, UC Riverside 210, Hawaii 215, UC Davis 218, Cal State Northridge 233, Cal State Fullerton 261, Long Beach State 306, Cal Poly 323. -- Los Angeles Daily News

Q&A: Debbi Michiko Florence, Author of ‘Keep It Together, Keiko Carter’

Sure! I was born in San Francisco and raised in Los Angeles, got my B.S. in Zoology and minor in English at UC Davis and my K-8 teaching certificate from Cal State Northridge. I am a born and bred Californian, but as an adult I have moved quite a bit, living in the Midwest, on the East Coast, Mexico, China, and now New England where I hope to stay. Through it all, I wrote stories, at first just for myself, but then in the early 2000s with the hope of getting published. I joined critique groups, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, took workshops and attended conferences, read many middle grade and young adult novels and craft books, and all the while wrote, revised, submitted, collected rejections, and kept learning and growing. -- Nerd Daily
