Sharing his love of black art, and life, with others

The idea for this exhibit was a couple of years in the making. The San Diego Museum of Art approached us to collaborate, and specifically wanted a photography exhibition. After working through a few proposals, I contacted California State University, Northridge about a collection of African American photography they had been gifted. When I called them, I was connected with the collection archivist, Keith Rice. The photos were a combination of content, art and history. The subject matter includes a number of celebrities, primarily because the photographers had unfettered access to these celebrities. Even with celebrities as the primary subjects, these individuals demonstrate friendship, family, and the brilliance of performing that are, in my opinion, the cornerstone of who we are. -- San Diego Union-Tribune

Examples of Excelencia Recipients

AIMS2 uses a cohort-based model to create that feeling among students, said S. K. Ramesh, director of the program and a professor at Cal State Northridge. Students from across disciplines work together, breaking down the silos in which students in different majors typically exist, Ramesh said, which creates a collaborative environment. Faculty members and those running the program also look out for students and meet each month to discuss how each individual student is doing. -- Inside Higher Ed
