Introducing the 2024 College of Humanities Dean’s Scholar Emma Carroll

Emma CarrollEmma Carroll, the 2024 College of Humanities Dean’s Scholar, has long been focused on excellence. A Bachelor of Arts in English/Creative Writing, a 4.0 GPA, and a recurring place on the Dean’s List are just a few of the many accomplishments that clearly highlight how she never lost sight of her academic goals.

Continually driven by high aspirations during her undergraduate tenure here at CSUN, she was a member of the GE Honors Program, the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. After joining the prestigious Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, she served as the chapter’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director and became a champion of the organization’s core values. She was especially inspired by their philosophy that knowledge is attained through many aspects of life, including among others: education, philanthropy, occupation, family, and creativity. In that spirit, Emma augmented her formal education with important lessons from a number of outside endeavors. She expertly balanced schoolwork with her job at an independent community centered bookstore and her charity work with Chabad of Malibu among others. So many notable accomplishments were possible because of her unyielding passion for learning and her commitment to community involvement. Qualities that were often recognized by those fortunate enough to cross her path. “While Emma’s intelligence is impressive,” noted one professor, “what is perhaps more striking is her ambition and desire to grow as an academic. She is humble enough to seek advice, receptive to criticism, and truly possess a growth mindset.” Another mentor shared, “Between her time as a supplemental instruction leader for freshman at CSUN, donating her time to her local Chabad, and the JED Program, Emma has demonstrated to me by way of her service and studies, that she has a strong commitment to the Los Angeles youth community.” And one of her employers observed, “A quality of admiration in Emma is an ability to balance all of the demands presented to her and the demands she places on herself. While there is worry of burnout, Emma seems to take it all in stride and carry on with equal zeal to every task or goal placed in her path.”

We are truly proud to have been a part of Emma’s journey to date and consider ourselves highly fortunate to forever count her among our esteemed alumni in CSUN’s College of Humanities.
