First-Time Freshman Enrollment

Fall 2025

Sat.-only and Fri.-Sat. classes begin Aug. 23.
Weekday classes begin Aug. 25.

Taking all the steps in the order they are presented below will get you off to a good start with your first-semester registration process.

  1. Before the May 1, 2025, deadline, log in with your CSUN user ID and password to submit your Intent to Enroll in order to receive important CSUN communications.

  2. Locate the academic advising center for your major at New Freshman Advising. While there, also download, save and read the “First-Time Freshman Advisement Checklist (PDF)” to prepare for your advising appointment.

  3. Check your CSUN email account for instructions on how to schedule an appointment with your designated academic advising center. You will enroll with your advisor.

  4. Sign up for mandatory, fun and informative New Student Orientation for first-time freshmen.

  5. Be on the look-out for an email invitation to participate in one of CSUN’s transition programs for first-time freshmen in the summer before your fall classes begin. One example is Pathways to Excellence (P2E).

Important!

Before enrolling, you must complete the Title IX "Not Anymore" online video course. This and all other registration holds will block your class enrollment until you clear them.

Your advisor will counsel you on course selection and degree requirements. Here’s an overview:

  • For your first semester, you will enroll with your advisor, sometimes in registration workshops with other students.

  • You will have an “advising mandatory” hold in the CSUN Portal until your scheduled advisement meeting.

  • It’s a good idea to log in to the CSUN Portal now to check for any registration holds, including the Title IX: Not Anymore training hold.

If you are a member of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, be sure to review the special instructions at NCOD advisement.

CSUN’s degree planning tools are designed to help you find the best path to your Bachelor’s degree! Along with your advisor, the tools guide you in selecting the right courses at the right time, not only saving time and money but also streamlining your path to graduation.

We recommend using the degree planning tools in the following order:

  1. Degree Road Maps: Outlines the required courses you need to take in your major and the order to take them in.

  2. Degree Progress Report (DPR): Provides a full picture, or audit, of your progress toward completion of degree requirements.

    1. If you took college courses while in high school or you’ve taken AP, CLEP or IB exams, you can immediately use the DPR audit to see how these credits apply to your CSUN degree requirements. Visit admitted first-time freshmen for test score and transcript details.

    2. If not, no worries. Explore the degree planning tools anyway!

  3. DPR/Planner: Allows undergraduates to plan courses for future semesters based on the DPR audit of remaining degree requirements. You can export planned courses from DPR to the Registration Planner.

  4. Registration Planner: Generates all possible class schedules in seconds! Just select desired courses and break times and let the app do the work.

It’s a best practice to take a few steps in a certain order before registration begins each semester. Besides clearing any registration holds, you’ll want to:

  1. Check your CSUN email for a registration notice several weeks before enrollment begins.

  2. Log in to the CSUN Portal to review your checklist (guide) for any incomplete tasks.

  3. Look for your enrollment appointment in your portal checklist. This is the earliest date and time you can start enrolling.*

*As a new freshman, you’ll have an enrollment appointment for your second semester but not the first.

Find more information for new students at How To Register.

As a first-time freshman, you will enroll with an academic advisor during the advising appointment that you schedule. In later semesters, you’ll be enrolling in classes more independently.

Find specific enrollment dates, registration periods and deadlines for your first semester at When to Register.
