When to Register

Each fall and spring semester has three registration periods in which you enroll, adjust your schedule and use the features of the self-service registration system.

Below are the fall 2025 registration periods and dates.

Fall 2025

Sat.-only and Fri.-Sat. classes begin Aug. 23.
Weekday classes begin Aug. 25.

Registration-by-Appointment

From your enrollment appointment
through July 1, 2025

You may begin registering at your assigned time, located in your CSUN Portal Checklist, and continue to adjust your schedule after that.

Nonrestrictive Registration

July 2 through Aug. 24, 2025

Sometimes called “open registration.” No appointment is required to enroll, but competition for classes can increase.

  • Repeating a course previously taken at CSUN is permitted beginning July 2. Consult with your academic advisor before repeating.

  • Maximum academic load: 18 enrolled units.

  • Wait listing continues (maximum of 13 units).

  • Permission numbers are not required to add unless the class is restricted.

Payment Deadline

Tuition and other mandatory fees are due at the time of registration but no later than the payment due date, which arrives before classes begin.

  • Be sure to pay for your classes on time to avoid disenrollment!
  • If enrolling after the payment deadline, payment is due at the time of registration.

If you are a financial aid recipient with enough anticipated aid to cover tuition and other fees, you do not need to pay at the time of registration.

When adding classes or adjusting your schedule, always check your account balance for the amount you owe. Learn more at Financial Account Information Guide.

Late Registration & Schedule Adjustment

Aug. 25 through Sept. 21, 2025

You may continue to add classes, swap, drop, and change the basis of grading online through Sept. 21, the end of the fourth week of classes.

An exception is the deadline to drop classes online, based on your class level:

  • Graduate students (master’s, doctorate, credential and university certificate) have until Friday, Sept. 12, to drop classes online.
  • Undergraduate students (first and second bachelor’s) have until Sunday, Sept. 21 to drop online.

Registration in a previously taken course is permitted and the maximum academic load remains 18 enrolled units for undergraduate students.

Weeks of Instruction

Week 1: Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, 2025

  • No permission is required to add classes unless they are restricted.
  • The last day to wait list for closed classes is Monday, Sept. 1 (the Labor Day Holiday). Wait listing is not available after that.

Weeks 2 to 4: Sept. 2 to 21

  • Starting Sept. 2, add classes online in self-service only with a permission number from the professor (or the department offering the course).

  • The last day to drop classes online is 11:59 p.m. on:

    • Sept. 12 for graduate students
    • Sept. 21 for undergraduate students
  • After Sept. 12 or 21, formal approval is required to drop one or more classes, swap classes or change the basis of grading.

  • Please finalize your schedule by Sept. 21, the end of the fourth week of classes, when recorded enrollments are considered official.

Weeks 5 to 12: Sept. 22 to Nov. 14

Withdrawing from one or more classes (i.e., dropping) requires formal permission.  For policies, instructions and forms, refer to Late Schedule Changes
