Voluntary COVID-19 Employee Testing

CSUN is now providing free, voluntary COVID-19 screening to campus employees approved to work on campus. We have engaged a third-party vendor, Picture, by Fulgent Genetics, to increase our testing capacity and offer free, convenient testing services to employees as one of several initiatives in place to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

  • Testing is strongly recommended for all CSUN faculty and staff specifically approved to physically work continually or periodically on campus.
  • This testing is currently not available to faculty & staff working remotely.
  • Please note: This type of testing is for asymptomatic individuals (i.e. no symptoms) only. If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, we recommend you contact your healthcare provider immediately for further evaluation. Anyone who has contracted COVID-19 within the last 90 days should not participate in this ongoing testing.

  • To participate, register by selecting and completing the following registration link.
    • Employees may use their work computers to login and request the test kit. An employee that does not have a work computer, will be provided access to one if needed.

  • After verifying that you are approved to work on campus, you will be emailed a nasal swab testing kit gift code from CSUN Human Resources.
  • Visit the Picture Genetics website:
    • Select "I have a gift code or kit from my employer/school"
    • Select "I have a code, but no kit"
    • Enter your kit gift code, and select "Redeem Code"
    • Create an account. You may use a personal email.
    • Complete three health status questions to confirm your eligibility for testing, and provide some demographic and contact information.
    • Submit the order.  The screen will reflect $0 cost.
  • You will be sent a COVID-19 nasal swab kit via FedEx 2-day shipping.

  • When you’re ready to take the test you’ll activate the kit in the portal and collect your nasal swab sample
  • Mail it back via FedEx to Picture/Fulgent Genetics in a pre-labeled, pre-paid overnight envelope.
    • Ensure your kit is dropped off before the last Express pickup of the day, and not on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday.

  • Your secure digital results report will be available in your Picture portal within 48 hours after your sample is received. You will have the option to schedule a telehealth consult at this time
  • Only you and the contracted vendor will have access to employee test results. CSUN will only be able to request results in aggregate form (no identifiable information).
  • 25% of the testing participating population will be selected weekly for testing so that each employee is tested once a month.

Will I be charged for testing?

No. Testing is offered at no cost to employees.

How do I get my result?

The third party testing vendor will process the results within 48 hours of receipt at their lab. Your results will be available in the Picture portal account you created.

As important as ensuring that your sample is shipped back to the lab within 24 hours of collecting your sample, so too is logging into the Picture portal and accessing your results.  We recommend you begin to check the portal for your results 48 hours after dropping off your package with FedEx. This timeliness can help you take appropriate action as necessary to keep you and others safe.

Only our contracted vendor will have access to employee test results. CSUN will only be able to request results in aggregate form (no identifiable information).

What happens if my test result is positive?

The vendor, Picture/Fulgent Genetics, is required to report any positive cases to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).

Timeliness in obtaining the results of your test is important. If positive, you knowing your results as soon as possible can help you seek care and keep others safer sooner. Please be sure to login to the Fulgent portal 48 hours after submitting your test to view your results.

Your COVID-19 test results are confidential and will not be shared with CSUN.  However, we encourage employees that receive a positive result to report it to the campus so that we can conduct contact tracing. CSUN is working closely with public health to support those impacted by COVID-19.

If an employee tests positive, the vendor will relay the results to LACDPH who will outreach directly to the employee. County public health will begin contact tracing with the employee. Visit the county’s contact tracing webpage for more information. An individual who tested positive for COVID-19 will be given an order enforceable by law to isolate for at least 10 days by county health officials.

Can I get tested at a different location?

Yes, This testing is voluntary.

If you feel more comfortable testing on your own, testing may be available through your medical provider, or you may schedule a free test at one of the LA County Public Health Department’s community testing sites (Note: Appointments are limited at the community testing sites.)

If you request a testing kit gift code but are unable to redeem it, please contact Human Resources at employeecovidtesting@ so we may provide the kit gift code to another employee.
