Title V Refund Policy

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by The Board of Trustees.

The Title V Refund Policy mandated by the Office of the Chancellor is effective at California State University, Northridge.

The highlights are as follows:

Fall 2014

  • A 100% refund of basic and/or nonresident fees will be given to students who drop all their classes or withdraw from the University no later than August 24, 2014. Refundable fees include tuition and other fees.
  • Students who drop units resulting in a lower fee structure, and non-resident tuition will be entitled to a refund of applicable tuition and other fees up to the end of the designated campus add, drop, swap period, September 12, 2014. After this date, a student who remains enrolled but swaps/drops classes resulting in a lower fee category or non-resident tuition will NOT be eligible for a refund.
  • The ADD, DROP, SWAP period for FALL 2014 is August 25, 2014 through September 12, 2014.
  • A prorated refund to withdrawal partially from the first day of instruction, August 25, 2014, up to the 60th percent point in the academic period, will be applied to students who withdraw from the University.

THE PRO-RATA CALCULATION FOR FALL 2013 FOLLOWS THIS FORMULA:

                Refund Percent = (1- days enrolled/days in term)

                For the FALL 2014 Term, the following applies:

                                First Day of Instruction: AUGUST 25, 2014

                                Last Day of Fall Term: DECEMBER 16, 2014

                                Total Days in Term: 114 Days

The last day for any pro-rata refund = 114 days x 60.5% = 69th day which equates to the business day of November 1, 2014.

EXAMPLE OF PRO-RATA REFUND:

                Class Begins: August 25, 2014

                Student Withdrawal Date: October 6, 2014

                Undergraduate (6.1 + units) Fees: $3,272.00

                Days in Term: 114 days

                Days Enrolled: 43 days

                Refund Rate: (1-(43/114)) = 1 - .377 = 62.3%

                Refund Amount: $2,038.46

You can view the actual calculated refund amount in your student account beginning October 1, 2014.

Summer 2014

  • A 100% refund of basic and/or nonresident fees will be given to students who drop all their classes or withdraw from the University no later than:
    • Sessions 1 & 2: May 26, 2014
    • Session 3: July 8, 2014
  • Refundable fees include tuition and other fees.
  • Students who drop units resulting in a lower fee structure, and non-resident tuition will be entitled to a refund of applicable tuition and other fees up to the end of the designated campus add, drop, swap period:
    • Sessions 1 & 2: June 6, 2014.
    • Session 3: July 18, 2014
    • After this date, a student who remains enrolled but swaps/drops classes resulting in a lower fee category or non-resident tuition will NOT be eligible for a refund.
  • The ADD, DROP, SWAP period for:
    • Sessions 1 & 2: May 27, 2014 through June 6, 2014
    • Session 3: July 9, 2014 through July 18, 2014
  • For a complete withdrawal from all classes after a session begins, but before its 60% point, you may be eligible for a prorated refund if you officially withdraw between:
    • Session 1: May 27, 3014 – July 16, 2014 – 60% point
    • Session 2: May 27, 2014 – June 21, 2014 – 60% point
    • Session 3: July 9, 2014 – August 3, 2014 – 60% point

EXAMPLE OF PRO-RATA REFUND:

Session 1 (12 weeks)

                Class Begins: May 27, 2014

                Student Withdraw Date: June 13, 2014

                Amount Paid: $3,059.00

                Days in Term: 85 days

                Days Enrolled: 18 days

                Refund Rate: (1-18/85) = 1 - .212 = 78.8%

                Refund Amount: $2,420.49

Session 2 (6 weeks)

                Class Begins: May 27, 2014

                Student Withdrawal Date: June 8, 2014

                Amount Paid: $3,059.00

                Days in Term: 43 days

                Days Enrolled: 13 days

                Refund Rate: (1-13/43) = 1 - .302 = 69.8%

                Refund Amount: $2,135.18

Session 3 (6 weeks)

                Class Begins: July 9, 2014

                Student Withdrawal Date: July 30, 2014

                Amount Paid: $3,059.00

                Days in Term: 42 days

                Days Enrolled: 22 days

                Refund Rate: (1-22/42) = 1 - .524 = 47.6%

                Refund Amount: $1,456.08

You can view the actual calculated refund amount in your student account beginning July 23, 2014.

Spring 2014

  • A 100% refund of basic and/or nonresident fees will be given to students who drop all their classes or withdraw from the University no later than January, 20, 2014. Refundable fees include tuition and other fees.
  • Students who drop units resulting in a lower fee structure, and non-resident tuition will be entitled to a refund of applicable tuition and other fees up to the end of the designated campus add, drop, swap period, February 7, 2014. After this date, a student who remains enrolled but swaps/drops classes resulting in a lower fee category or non-resident tuition will NOT be eligible for a refund.
  • The ADD, DROP, SWAP period for SPRING 2014 is January 21, 2014 through February 7, 2014.
  • A prorated refund to withdrawal partially from the first day of instruction, January. 21, 2014, up to the 60th percent point in the academic period, will be applied to students who withdraw from the University.

THE PRO-RATA CALCULATION FOR SPRING 2014 FOLLOWS THIS FORMULA:

                Refund Percent = (1- days enrolled/days in term)

                For the SPRING 2014 term, the following applies:

                                First Day of Instruction: January 21, 2014

                                Last Day of SPRING Term: May 17, 2014

                                Total Days in Term: 111 Days

The last day for any pro-rata refund = 111 days x 60.4% = 67th day which equates to the business day of March 28, 2014.

EXAMPLE OF PRO-RATA REFUND:

                Class Begins: January 21, 2014

                Student Withdrawal Date: March 9, 2014

                Full Time Undergraduate Fees: $3,260.00

                Days in Term: 111 days

                Days Enrolled: 48 days

                Refund Rate: (1 – (48/111)) = 1 - .432 = 56.8%

                Refund Amount: $1,851.68

TO VIEW YOUR ACTUAL REFUND AMOUNT IN SOLAR:

  • Log into myNorthridge portal
  • Go to the Financial Matters tab
  • Under the My Financial Obligations section
  • Select View Account Information

Note: A financial aid student who completely withdraws for a period of enrollment may be subject to repayment, including medical withdraws. Consult with the financial aid office for additional information.

IMPORTANT!

It is the sole responsibility of the student to withdraw from classes. Refunds can only be issued to students who withdraw from classes by the published deadlines. Students are responsible for verifying/confirming withdraws from classes by printing a copy of their schedule using SOLAR.
