Person Centered Access for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 4:20 PM PST
Location
Orange County 3/4
Description
Too many times in accessibility the needs of the person are assessed without considering the scope, environment, and variables required to deliver an accommodation. Interpreting certifications and requirements vary from state to state. Captioning technology (human/speech recognition/AI) is evolving and changing. How can decision-makers be expected to evaluate the qualifications of an interpreter or measure the accuracy of a captioner? It’s an impossible task for so many professionals in a disabilities support role. With increased workloads and limited staffing, the challenges continue to grow. Being a subject matter expert in dozens of disabilities is almost impossible. Recognition is the first step! Sharing best practices for the Deaf and Hearing community will build a foundation for understanding how to best communicate. Sign language users often will nod their heads to indicate understanding of what is being said. This does not indicate they agree with what is being said. While this may seem basic, hearing people often make assumptions and are simply not equipped. Deaf people have their own culture that is different from the majority culture — that is, the hearing/speaking culture. Like other communities, differences in cultures can influence interactions and communication. Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing people, like any other population, are diverse in ethnicity, education, and backgrounds. There is not one-size-fits-all approach.
