WCAG 2.2 - What It Means for You as Designers

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 10:20 AM PST
Location
Grand JK
Description
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 (WCAG 2.2) is currently in CR but due to be released in December 2022. WCAG 2.2 builds on WCAG 2.1 by adding 9 new success criteria addressing issues for: • users with low vision • users with cognitive impairments • users with mobility issues Several of the new success criteria are considered to just be formalising what many accessibility experts consider best practice and hence advised their teams or clients to do anyway. For example, sufficient touch target size was always considered good advice – why would you want to design an interactive element that is difficult to activate? Having a requirement that focus indication not only be present but defining what constitutes clearly visible is also a welcome addition to assist low vision users. There is lots of work around categorising WCAG success criteria by what role in a development team should be taking responsibility for which criteria. The three design roles often considered when discussing who should take primary responsibility for accessibility are: • visual design • interaction or UX design • content design and preparation Other roles with implementation responsibility include the developer which we will briefly discuss in this presentation in terms of how the success criteria could be implemented once designers have addressed the criteria.
