Create, Learn, Code! – Introduce Coding with Tangible Result

Date & Time
Thursday, March 16, 2023 - 10:20 AM PST
Location
Orange County 1/2
Description
Learning to code is one of the most common curricula that have found its way into standard offerings throughout today’s educational landscape. Often these curricula are very visual in nature and students who are blind are unable to participate in this instruction. From start to finish, this process can pose significant challenges to a blind student at all stages, from the initial concept learning phase, through the creation and reading of one’s code, to the result being something that the student can meaningfully experience. With the ever-growing technology space, the world of computing programming is in high demand with a shortage of programmers. Having the right tools to assist the engagement level in the early stages of coding is essential in continuing the journey with what can become a successful career path and serve as a means to deplete the high unemployment rate for the visually impaired. This presentation will demonstrate how one can use accessible tools to introduce a blind student to coding concepts through tactile pods and introduce methods by which students can easily transition to writing and editing code using a refreshable braille device. This natural progression in the learning process will enable a student to create code whilst receiving both speech and braille feedback independently.
