A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure method of accessing the University´s computing resources when you are logged in from an off–campus computer or a laptop you are using to access the wireless network. The VPN creates a secure connection called a “tunnel” between your computer and the campus network. The tunnel disguises the information you are sending and receiving, so your electronic communications are secure and protected.
Enhanced security and privacy are the two main reasons to use VPN. You also have an ability to access University resources such as information on your network drives. This provides you with a safe way of accessing your applications and files as though you are working on the computer in your workstation.
Students, faculty, staff (and other approved users) with a CSUN Username and Password can download VPN to their computers. The VPN software is available for no additional cost and downloading only takes about five minutes. Please refer to the instructions contained in the links below for assistance:
Q: I am repeatedly being prompted for my CSUN Username and Password when I try to connect. Why is this happening?
A: Make sure you are using your correct Username and Password. To confirm this, you can try to log into the CSUN Account Utility page at http://www.csun.edu/account. If you continue to have difficulties, contact the IT Help Desk.
Q: When I try to connect to the VPN system, I receive the message, “Initializing the connection.” However, after a while, I am simply back at the connection screen where it says, “disconnected.” Why does this happen?
A: Ensure that you have the correct information for the configuration of the VPN connection. To check this, select the VPN connection that you have already created, then click the “Modify” button. When you are at the configuration screen, make sure the “Host” value is set to “vpn.csun.edu,” and that both the Group Authentication name and password is set to “csun-vpn.” If you continue to have difficulties, contact the IT Help Desk.
Q: I receive an error message indicating that the VPN software is “Unable to contact the security gateway.”
A: Close down the VPN software, then restart your computer. In most cases, this will resolve the issue. If you continue to have difficulties, contact the IT Help Desk.
