Application Filing Periods & Deadlines

To apply for admission to California State University, Northridge (CSUN), you'll need to know:

  1. Is the application filing period for your target degree and program open or closed?

  2. Are you eligible for admission to your target degree and program?

Initial Filing Periods 

The initial application filing period is the minimum time that applications for admission are considered. The initial filing periods for CSUN are:

  • FALL semester admission: October 1 - November 30*
  • SPRING semester admission: August 1-31* 

*Graduate programs typically remain open for an extended time beyond the initial filing period. For details, select the “Graduate Student” row below.

First-Time Freshman

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2015.

Current Status:

CLOSED.

Important Dates:

SAT/ACT scores are required for all first-time freshmen and must be received by Admissions and Records no later than August 31, 2015. See additional requirements at Applicants.

 

Fall 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2015.

Freshman applications must be received during the initial filing period.

New:  The rules for freshman impaction have changed and seven majors are impacted. Please see CSUN Impaction and the requirements for first-time freshman Applicants (details posted by October 1).

Impacted Majors:  Seven majors are impacted at CSUN:

  • Accountancy, Finance, and Business Administration – Insurance and Financial Services option. You will need to apply for the related "pre-major" in CSUMentor and meet prerequisites in your initial studies. See Undergraduate Programs in Business.
  • Cinema & Television Arts, Kinesiology, Music and Psychology. Please see CSUN Impaction.

Current Status:

CLOSED.

Important Dates:

Transfer Student

Lower-division transfer student applications are not currently considered for admission to Cal State Northridge. To confirm that you are an upper-division transfer student, please visit Applicants.

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2015

Current Status:

CLOSED.

Important Dates:

All admission requirements must be completed by the end of the Fall 2015 semester. Please see additional requirements at Applicants.

 

Fall 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2015.

Transfer applications must be received during the initial filing period.

New: Beginning with Fall 2016 admission, CSUN is impacted to transfer students and seven impacted majors. Please see CSUN Impaction and Applicants (details by October 1).

Impacted Majors:

Three Undergraduate Programs in Business:

  • Accountancy
  • Finance
  • Business Administration – Insurance and Financial Services option

And these four majors:

  • Cinema & Television Arts
  • Kinesiology
  • Music
  • Psychology

Undergraduate Cross Enrollment, Intrasystem Concurrent Enrollment, Intrasystem Visitor Enrollment, Talented High School Student

Spring 2016: CLOSED.

Fall 2016: CLOSED.

After the application filing period closes, eligible CSU students may be able to enroll through the “CSU Fully Online Courses” program. Learn more at Enrollment Programs.

Credential Student

 

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2015.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, individual credential programs may have earlier closing dates.

For individual credential program application deadlines or exceptions, contact the CSUN Credential Office.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required—one to the University and the other to the Credential Program.

Current Status:

The Credential Program application filing period CLOSED January 10, 2016. 

  • The CSUMentor university application typically remains open after the Credential Program application closes to accommodate applicants who did not submit a university application. Both a university and a credential program application are required.
  • Please do not submit a university application after January 10, 2016 unless you have already applied to the Credential Program.

Fall 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

October 1, 2015.

University applications for graduate programs, including credential programs, are typically accepted after the initial filing period. However, individual credential programs may have earlier closing dates.

For individual credential program application timelines, review the Credential Programs website or contact the CSUN Credential Office.

NOTE: Two (2) applications are required - one to the University and another to the Credential Program.

Current Status:

OPEN.

Graduate Student - Master's and Doctorate

 

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2015.

Graduate applications for master's degree programs will be accepted through November 1, 2015 unless the individual program closes earlier.

Individual graduate programs may have earlier closing dates than the University deadline published here. For individual program application deadlines, contact the department of interest from the Index of Graduate Programs.

Some graduate programs consider applications only for fall—not spring—admission. For individual program status, see "Current Status" below.

Note that two (2) applications are often required - one to the University and the other to the individual graduate program. Read more at Applicants.

Current Status:

OPEN to the following graduate programs only:

  • Education - MA in Educational Administration, K-12 option
  • Elementary Education - all options
  • Special Education - all specializations
  • Theatre

All other graduate programs are CLOSED.

The Tseng College (extended learning) offers several self-support degree and certificate programs.

 

Fall 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

October 1, 2015.

Graduate applications for master's degree programs will be accepted by the University through June 15, 2016 unless the individual program closes earlier.

Please note that individual graduate programs may have earlier application closing dates than the University deadline published here. For individual program application deadlines, contact the department of interest at Graduate Programs.

Note that two (2) applications are often required - one to the University and another to the individual graduate program. Read more at Applicants.

Current Status:

OPEN.

CLOSED to the following graduate programs:

Education Doctorate - Community College Leadership (Ed.D.); Family & Consumer Sciences (all options); Social Work (MSW).

 The Tseng College (extended learning) offers several self-support degree and certificate programs.

Post-Baccalaureate, Unclassified Student

Post-baccalaureate unclassified applications are not currently considered for admission to Cal State Northridge. Read more about classified and conditionally classified status in the University Catalog.

Second Bachelor's Student

Applications for second bachelor's degrees in all majors are strictly limited at this time.

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period Begins:

August 1, 2015. 

Second bachelor's degree applicants will need to submit their online CSUMentor application no later than November 1, 2015.

Current Status:

CLOSED.

Fall 2016 Admission

October 1 through November 30, 2015.

Graduate Intrasystem Concurrent Enrollment, Intrasystem Visitor Enrollment

Spring 2016: OPEN if the graduate degree program is open.

Fall 2016: OPEN if the graduate degree program is open.

Returning Student

Spring 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

August 1-31, 2015.

Current Status:

CLOSED to returning undergraduate applicants.

OPEN to returning graduate applicants.

Important Dates:

Returning graduate applicants should review requirements at Returning to CSUN.

 

Fall 2016 Admission

Initial Filing Period:

October 1 through November 30, 2015.

Returning undergraduate students must apply for admission during the initial filing period. Review the requirements for returning students, whether in good standing or previously disqualified in the last semester at CSUN, at Applicants.

Current Status:

CLOSED to returning undergraduate applicants.

OPEN to returning graduate applicants.

Important Dates:

Returning undergraduate students must complete the Previously Disqualified Student Questionnaire (.pdf) and submit it to Admissions & Records no later than March 1, 2016.
