Athletic Academic Support

The Matador Achievement center provides academic support services that are supplemental to what the CSUN campus offers all students. We offer later office hours for tutoring, study hall, and one-on-one learning specialist meetings. We also offer a drop-in computer lab for student-athletes, equipped with the free PrintAnywhere software. Click below to learn more about all that we offer.

The Matador Achievement Center offers free tutoring services exclusively to current student-athletes. We do not provide tutoring for non-student-athletes.

Tutoring sessions are available Monday through Thursday by appointment. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments up to a week in advance, however same-day appointments can be made when available. Winter and Summer tutoring are available on a case-by-case basis depending on specific course needed.

Tutors at the Matador Achievement Center model strategies for tackling difficult subjects and teach students effective techniques for improving specific academic skills. They work closely with student-athletes to clarify points of difficulty, providing tools for success in the classroom and fostering independent learning.

Campus Tutoring Recourses

The Learning Specialist Programs provide personalized academic support tailored to individual needs and includes two options: Assistant Learning Specialist (ALS) or Staff Learning Specialist. Sessions typically range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, occurring 1 to 4 times a week or bi-weekly (Monday-Friday). These sessions are goal-oriented and focus on key areas such as study skills, test preparation techniques, alternative learning strategies, structured study time, and referrals to campus resources.

PLA

The Peer Learning Assistant (PLA) program helps incoming student-athletes transition smoothly into college life, ensuring they feel supported as they adjust to their academic and athletic responsibilities at CSUN. The PLA meetings are held in group sessions and occur weekly to guide them in transitioning their previously learned academic skills to CSUN. These skills include but are not limited to time management, study strategies, metacognitive learning, setting short- and long-term goals and identifying the steps needed to achieve them.

ALS

The Assistant Learning Specialist (ALS) program is designed for new transfer and continuing CSUN student-athletes to build upon the skills gained in PLA or from a student’s previous academic experience. The individual ALS sessions provide support in topics such as study strategies, time management, reading and writing, test-taking, and note-taking. The goal is to help them balance academics with their athletic responsibilities and become independent learners.

Learning Specialist

The Learning Specialist is an academic resource for students who seek heightened services for academic success. This role works closely with students who are registered with the DRES office, could have learning differences (such as English as Second Language learners), or could use an accountability system to keep them honest and on track for their academic goals. Sessions are task oriented and review topics such as study skills, test prep techniques, alternative learning methods, structured study time, and campus resource referrals.

Technology

The Equipment Checkout Program at the Matador Achievement Center provides student-athletes with access to essential technology to support their academic success. This program ensures that student-athletes have the tools they need for their academics, including laptops, iPads, and calculators. These resources are available for educational use, with priority given to those who are enrolled in classes that require the technology.

Checkout Procedures:

  1. Visit the Matador Achievement Center (Bayramian Hall 525).
  2. Present evidence of need (e.g., syllabus for a class requiring a graphing calculator, essay prompt for a laptop).
  3. Sign the checkout policy agreement.
  4. Receive the equipment immediately.

Return Procedures: At the end of the semester, student-athletes must bring the items back to the Matador Achievement Center promptly. If technology is not returned by deadline, a financial hold will be placed on student’s account until it is.

If you have any questions, please contact the Technology Coordinator:

Structured Study Hall (Drop-In and Team Based)

The Structured-Based Study Hall program is designed to support student-athletes by providing a structured environment for academic success. This service is tailored to meet the needs of each student-athlete/team and can include scheduled study hall sessions throughout the week or weekly drop-in hour requirements. The program helps student-athletes build consistent study habits and manage their academic responsibilities alongside their athletic commitments.
