Social Welfare & Social Justice Concentration

For students who are interested in gaining hands-on social work practice experience working with marginalized individuals, groups, and communities within a variety of settings (schools, non-profit organizations, nursing homes, community centers, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, crisis shelters, juvenile justice centers)


For students who want to pursue graduate school (a master’s degree in the helping professions: such as in social work (MSW degree), marriage and family counseling (MFT), public health, counseling, and psychology

Opportunities and Resources:

  • Cohort/colleagues in same classes—create networks and community!

  • Invitation to an annual Agency Fair (will assist with securing an internship—may lead to job possibility post-graduation)

  • Participation in MSW application seminar (how to apply, how to craft a social work resume/helping professions, what to write in the personal statement) in preparation for graduate school

  • Inclusion on a list-serve for social work job opportunities

Social Welfare and Social Justice
Courses offered:

  • SOC 356: Social Welfare Institutions

  • SOC 357: Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice (40 hours of internship required over the course of one semester)

  • SOC 426: Social Welfare Policy

  • SOC 492: Human Behavior in the Social Environment

  • SOC 493: Diversity & Social Justice

  • *SOC 490S/F: Supervised Field Instruction (120 hours of internship required (40 hours of internship required over the course of one semester)

  • *The pre-requisite for SOC 490 S/F is SOC 357.

Internship Opportunities


Select from a list of over 100 non-profit organizations in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley that have partnered with CSUN to provide internship opportunities for students to gain experience in the field.You have the freedom to select an agency or non-profit (not on the list) to complete your internship.
