The 2026 national Black History Month theme, "A Century of Black History Commemorations," honors 100 years of intentional efforts to study, teach, and celebrate the history and global impact of people of African descent. This centennial milestone reflects the legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the founders of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), who formally established the tradition of recognizing Black history in 1926.
In alignment with this theme, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) has adapted the theme, "Honoring Our Roots, Strengthening Our Path, and Shaping Our Future". This year’s theme invites us to reflect on how these public commemorations have shaped understanding, inspired scholarship, and affirmed the lived experiences of Black communities around the world. From early celebrations of emancipation to today’s global recognition of Black achievement, these observances have continually empowered Black people to reclaim their history, assert their identity, and influence societal change. In a time when inclusive and accurate history is urgently needed, Black History Month stands as a testament to resilience, truth-telling, and collective memory.
At CSUN, we proudly honor this century-long tradition and celebrate the enduring contributions of Black scholars, artists, innovators, and community leaders. As a university committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we recognize the importance of Black history.
Throughout February, our CSUN Heritage Black History Month page will feature:
- A full calendar of events across campus
- Narratives from Black students, faculty, and staff
- Custom Zoom backgrounds
- Curated campus-wide resources
- And much more
We invite the entire CSUN community and our partners to join us in celebrating Black history, culture, and excellence. Let this month be one of reflection, learning, and unity as we honor a century of commemorating Black history and continue the work of shaping the future.
