APIDA Heritage Month: Celebrating Asian, SWANA, Pasifika and South Asian Cultures

Interwoven: Identity, Solidarity, Strength

The 2026 national Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month theme, "Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together," highlights the importance of leveraging the collective power of Asian and Pasifika communities, uplifting their stories, and serving as bridge builders within and across communities. At California State University, Northridge (CSUN), due to our academic calendar, our celebration begins in April rather than May to ensure the inclusion and active participation of our campus community.

In alignment with this national theme, CSUN has adapted the campus theme, "Interwoven: Identity, Solidarity, Strength." This theme recognizes the layered identities and shared histories that shape our campus and extend far beyond it. Like threads in a tapestry, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) cultures, languages, migration journeys, and lived experiences are distinct, yet deeply interconnected. Together, they form a collective story grounded in perseverance, collaboration, and cultural pride.

Throughout April and May, the CSUN AANHPI/APIDA Heritage Month webpage will feature:

  • A full calendar of events taking place across campus
  • Narratives and spotlights from APIDA students, faculty, and staff
  • Custom Zoom backgrounds to show your support
  • Curated campus-wide resources
  • And more

We invite the entire CSUN community, along with our campus and community partners, to join us in celebrating Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi histories, cultures, and excellence. Together, we honor our interwoven stories, strengthen our solidarity, and continue building a future rooted in unity and collective power.

Asian American Studies

The CSUN AAS Department is, historically, the second Asian American Studies Department in the nation to achieve departmental status. There had been student demand for classes on Asian American experiences since the late 1960s. However, it wasn’t until 1990, under the leadership of former Vice President of Academic Affairs, Bob Suzuki, that the Asian American Studies (AAS) Department was established. The Asian American Studies Department at CSUN is dedicated to exploring and understanding the experiences of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi Americans, aiming to promote social justice, diversity, and cultural awareness through education and research. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the department.

AAS offers more than 30 courses – one of the most comprehensive AAS curriculum available in the California State University system. Students learn about a wide variety of topics: race and critical thinking, ethnic and multiracial communities, gender and sexuality, research methods; mental health and personality. Many of these courses also fulfill GE requirements.
