Master of Science, Speech-Language Pathology and the Doctor of Audiology

Each year, the Department tracks certain outcomes of the graduates of the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and the Doctor of Audiology degree programs in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. Student Achievement Data is monitored separately for students in State-Side Residential Programs and the Distance Learning Program.

 

The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology State-Side Residential program is a five semester program of study.  The State-Side Residential program is comprised of students attending classes on the campus of California State University Northridge. The first table shows the pass rate for the previous three academic years on the PRAXIS Examination.  This national examination is used by students to qualify for professional certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and to qualify for licensure in each state.  The three-year average pass rate is for the immediate past three years.

The residential program completion rate is seen in the second table.  The expected time for completion of the degree begins at the time a graduate student achieves Classified Graduate status, having completed degree program pre-requisites.

The online Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Communicative Disorders program is a 3 year, (10 semester) program.  The students do not attend classes on campus.  All courses are taken on-line and all supervised clinical education is completed in settings in the students’ areas of residence.  

The pass rate results on the PRAXIS Examination by the Distance Learning Program are seen in this first table.  This national examination is used by the distance learning students to qualify for professional certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and to qualify for licensure to practice in each state.

The final table shows the program completion rate for students in the distance learning cohorts for the past three years.  The expected time to completion for the degree is with each student’s cohort.  The program of study for a cohort is 36 months in duration.  Students in the distance learning program are required to take all of their classes and clinical practica with their assigned cohort.  The three-year average pertains to the average completion rate in the three most recent years.

The Doctor of Audiology State-Side Residential program is an 11 semester (4 years) program of study.  The Doctor of Audiology State-Side Residential program is comprised of students attending classes on the campus of California State University Northridge.  Clinical practica for the first three years of the program of study may be on campus as well as in the surrounding community.  Calculation of the expected time for completion of the degree begins at the time of admission.

The second table shows the pass rate for the previous three academic years on the PRAXIS Examination.  This national examination is used by students to qualify for licensure in the State of California.  Students in the Doctor of Audiology program at CSUN are expected to take the Praxis in Year 3 of their program of study.
