Student Safety Training

Scope

This page pertains solely to student safety trainings. Employees, including student assistants & HR processed volunteers, can receive comparable training through CSU Learn by emailing ehs@csun.edu.

Policy

In accordance with CSU Executive order 1039, all students must be made aware of present and potential hazards in their courses, labs, research activities, shops, and campus-sponsored extracurricular activities (i.e. clubs and organizations). Students must likewise receive safety training where present or potential hazards are identified. Upon request, EH&S can assist departments in conducting hazard assessments to determine the hazards and appropriate training(s). Contact EH&S at ehs@csun.edu for more information. 

Record Retention

Student training must be documented and training records must be maintained by the hosting department or college as determined by the Dean or Department Head. Training records shall be maintained for a period of three (3) years with the exception of hazardous waste training which shall be maintained for three (3) years following the student's departure from campus.

The electronic trainings available through the CSU Learn links listed below the Student Training Plans,  provide the students with certificates of completion.  CSU Learn student training courses linked below are not considered complete until students have provided their faculty supervisor with certificates of completion. 

Responsibilities

Training students is the responsibility of the departments or colleges, and may be supplemented by materials provided by EH&S. Training materials developed by faculty members or college/department staff should be reviewed by EH&S prior to implementation to ensure coherence with regulatory standards. Tracking and monitoring student training is the responsibility of the department/college to ensure completion of training in a reasonable timeframe.

Lab Safety Training

Pertinent to common hazards associated with working in a laboratory environment.

 

Access to the training is available to California State University, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.

Step 1: Students will need to log-in to the student training portal.

Step 2: Once logged in, students can use the links below to the specific courses identified below.

Shop Safety Training

Pertinent to spaces with power tools, hand tools, welding or chemicals.

Access to the training is available to California State University, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.

Step 1: Students will need to log-in to the student training portal.

Step 2: Once logged in, students can use the links below to the specific courses identified below.

Step 3: Students must contact their lab/shop instructor or faculty supervisor for information on how to submit their certificate of completion.

Other Safety Training

As applicable to a CSUN-organized activity.

Access to the training is available to California State University, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.

CSU Learn

CSU Learn is an online training tool that provides student with access to required safety trainings.  The above student safety training links are accessed via the CSU Learn platform.  CSU Learn is available to California State University, Northridge students who are active and enrolled in the current academic semester session.

Browser Requirements

Browser Troubleshooting

The following are tips for full functionality of CSU Learn courses:

  • Use a desktop or laptop computer
  • Use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browser
  • Allow pop-ups for the respective portals' URL, i.e., csu.sumtotal.host and centralstationu.skillport.com:443, as they are necessary for course functionality.
  • When receiving a log in error message: close all open browsers, clear your cache and cookies, and relaunch the course.
  • Use an on-campus desktop 
  • If access issues continue after trying all full functionality tips, contact the IT Help Center.
