Dr. Jade Huell, Chair, Department of Africana Studies

Welcome from the Chair

I am delighted to serve as Chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Northridge—a department with a proud legacy and a bold vision for the future. Africana Studies has been at the forefront of advancing knowledge, creativity, and advocacy rooted in the lived experiences of people of African descent.

The work of the department is grounded in the belief that Africana Studies is not only an academic discipline, but also a transformative practice. Through our courses, research, and community partnerships, we prepare students to think critically, engage deeply, and lead courageously. We invite our students to explore histories, philosophies, and cultural expressions that illuminate the richness of the African diaspora while also providing tools to confront the pressing challenges of our times.

As we continue to build on the department’s strong foundation, we remain committed to fostering an inclusive and empowering space where learning is connected to justice, imagination, and possibility. I welcome you to join us—whether as a student, colleague, or community partner—in shaping the future of Africana Studies here at CSUN and beyond.

Light,

Dr. Jade
