Student Employment Application

General Information

OIP is designed to provide a meaningful experience in career and self-awareness while complementing their educational experience. OIP students are trained in the areas of preadmissions consulting, guest relations, and marketing and communications with the principal purpose of increasing access to the CSU and California State University Northridge for high school students in our local area. OIP students provide peer advisor services to prospective students.

We currently service high schools and community college students in the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Greater Los Angeles Area and Santa Monica. If you live near these areas or are able to commute once or twice a week.

Duties

  • Provide in-person pre-college advisement for high school students in the areas of college and career awareness, life skills, financial aid, and academic preparedness in a one-on-one or group setting.

  • Assisting APIDA Outreach Counselor with implementing APIDA projects, events, presentations and representing CSUN at college fairs and community events.

  • Represent CSUN at college fairs and community agency fairs.

  • Provide support to outreach counselors with outreach and recruitment including but not limited to college department events, and office tasks.

  • Will learn and continue to train about CSUN admissions, academic departments, student services and other campus facts and highlights.

  • Give campus tours to prospective students and guests once a week.

  • Will give presentations to high school students and prospective students.

  • Host Calendly appointments with prospective students.

Schedule

  • Hours available: 15 to 20 hours a week

  • Must be available to work two days a week, four hours during the day, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

  • Must be available Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. for staff meetings/trainings

  • Must be available to work occasional evenings or weekends

  • Must commit to working a full academic year, beginning August 17, 2026, through May 14, 2027

Qualifications

  • All majors encouraged to apply. Minimum of sophomore status

  • Minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher

  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver's license and auto insurance.

  • Have experience and/or the desire working with K-12 students

  • Must be able to attend mandatory meetings, trainings and events

  • Leadership skills: must be professional, self-motivated, an independent thinker and flexible

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse environment

  • Must be friendly, approachable, trustworthy, team and goal oriented

  • Bilingual skills a plus

Position Description:

The Testing Center is responsible for coordinating assessment and testing activities across the University. The Testing Center student assistant assists with testing services offered at the Testing Center, including exam proctoring. The Testing Center student assistant also serves as an ambassador of the Testing Center and assists with daily institutional test administration, including national and professional exams, completing administrative processes as needed while collaborating with Testing Center staff to provide services to students, faculty, and staff.

Qualifications

  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA (semester and cumulative) and good academic standing with the university.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects at one time.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Support Testing Center operations, including answering phones, emails, responding to inquiries/questions and performing initial welcome of candidates.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Testing Center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the Testing Center.

Starts at $16.50 per hour

Days/Hours

Must be available to work Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Schedule will vary with maximum of 20 hours per week based on semester course schedule.) Must commit to work a full academic year.

Provide pre-college advisement to high school students participating in the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound is a federally funded TRiO program that seeks to increase the number of first generation and low-income students that successfully enroll in post secondary institutions.

Duties:

  • Under the supervision of the administrative assistant and project director, provide clerical support to the Upward Bound program.
  • Assist in the daily tasks, including but not limited to; typing and distributing correspondence, answering the phone and directing calls, filing, copying, data entry, translation of documents from English to Spanish, prepare bulk mailings, compile data and retrieve reports.
  • Assist staff in preparation for activities and workshops.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current student, sophomore and/or junior, in good academic standing
  • Knowledge of commonly used Microsoft (MS) software
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures and the operation of office machines (i.e. fax and copier)
  • Able to establish positive working relationships with staff and student assistants
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects at one time
  • Must be proactive, maintain confidentiality, reliable, responsible, self-directed, and detail oriented
  • Bilingual skills preferred (English – Spanish)
  • Must be friendly, punctual, professional, and a quick learner
  • Must be able to attend mandatory trainings once a month on Friday afternoons
  • Must be able to work at least four consecutive hours at a time and commit to full August-May academic year.

Purpose:

The mission of Upward Bound is to promote access to higher education by providing guidance and support to first generation and/or low income students. UB serves approximately 65 parents and students in the San Fernando Valley.

Classification: III

Wage: Wages start at $10.50 per hour and are based on experience.

Hours:

Fall or spring semesters, 12 to 15 hr. per week. Prefer students that have two to three full days during the week. Must be able to work at least four consecutive hours at a time and commit to a full August–May academic year.

Provide tutoring in areas of specific academic need (i.e., English, math, foreign language and the sciences) for high school students participating in the Upward Bound Program at CSUN. Upward Bound is federally funded TRiO program that seeks to increase the number of first generation and low-income students that successfully enroll in post-secondary institutions.

Duties:

  • Under the supervision of the program coordinator and UB staff, the UB Academic tutor will provide tutoring to Upward bound participants in small groups or individually.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of tutoring sessions, provide student followup and periodic assessments.
  • Assist in the planning and coordinating of the Saturday Academies and cultural/educational fieldtrips.
  • Provide pre-college advisement for student’s grades 9-12 in the areas of college awareness, life skills, financial aid, and academic preparedness.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions, held once a month on Fridays, to increase competency in working with students.
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
  • Provide accurate and precise information of post-secondary and financial aid opportunities.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Upward Bound participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to achieve project goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of sophomore status at a post-secondary institution required.

  • Two letters of reference from professors required.
  • Prior tutoring experiences with first generation, low-income middle school students in a classroom setting or after school program is a plus.

  • Must be able to attend mandatory trainings; prior to working in the schools, as well as monthly trainings held once a month on Fridays
