Making art is an assertion that our purpose is more than just surviving.
Every day, we move through structures and institutions that are meant to support, educate, protect, and care for us, yet they do not always succeed. Systems, data, and hierarchies of power can overlook the individual. Institutions can fail the people within them, causing disappointment, misunderstanding, and harm – sometimes at the hands of those we depend upon. Many works in this exhibition consider what it means to live within these contradictions and to search for a sense of self, connection, and meaning in a world that can sometimes feel indifferent to our individual lives.
This exhibition celebrates the Student Assistants of the CSUN Art Galleries as both artists and essential members of the Galleries’ community. Through their own work, they give form to their individual experiences, questions, and ways of seeing the world. Through their work in the Galleries, they extend that same care to others – measuring walls, handling artwork, building installations, adjusting lights, placing labels, and helping transform artists’ ideas into exhibitions that can be experienced and shared.
