Course Description: This course is designed to improve and enhance students' poetic skills by teaching them how poets and songwriters use the language devices of sound, sensory images, figurative language, and musical rhythms to share their insights. Throughout the course, students will experiment with writing in traditional formats as well as free-verse styles of poetry including lyric poems, narrative poems, odes, haiku, cinquains, and spoken word. Poetry allows students an opportunity to express their feelings and emotions while making connections to other people and situations. Poetry is a great way to enhance students’ reading, oral language, and writing skills.
