AI and VXR Initiatives in Higher Education

About

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS) at CSUN is engaging in an ongoing, college-wide conversation about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Extended Reality (VXR) in education and social services. This initiative, supported by the Dean Searcy and led by Dr. Ellie Kazemi (Department of Psychology), creates space for thoughtful exploration of how emerging technologies intersect with teaching, research, and community work.

Faculty and staff across the college hold a wide range of perspectives about AI, from active integration in classrooms and research to intentional limits on its use. This initiative does not prescribe a particular stance on AI or VXR. Instead, this initiative supports informed and thoughtful engagement grounded in shared academic values: intellectual rigor, student development, ethical and social responsibility, and meaningful human connection.

Through open discussions, practical workshops, research collaborations, and community spotlights, we aim to:

  • Examine both the possibilities and the limitations of AI and VXR
  • Share diverse approaches faculty are taking in their classrooms
  • Consider the broader social and professional implications of these technologies
  • Support informed, reflective decision-making

AI and VXR are reshaping higher education and the social services landscape. Our role as a college is to engage critically, collaboratively, and responsibly. We invite faculty, staff, and students (whether enthusiastic, skeptical, or still forming their views) to participate in shaping how our college responds to these changes.
