Scholarships and Awards


For students entering or continuing in the MFA in Screenwriting program, this scholarship requires the applicant to submit a feature length screenplay (PDF format). In the spirit of Abraham Polonsky’s personal vision and creative work, it is preferred that the submitted screenplay engage themes of social consciousness. This is a merit-based scholarship.

This award is granted to a CTVA graduating senior with an interest in critical writing. Applicants must upload a critical essay on a film topic (no less than 10 pages in length). The essay will be judged on both the substance of the content and the clarity and insightfulness of the argument (MS-Word or PDF). This is a merit-based award.

This award is granted to a CTVA graduating senior in the Screenwriting Option, and requires the applicant to submit a feature length screenplay (PDF format). This scholarship is awarded to a CTVA student entering their junior or senior year who has demonstrated a professional goal of a career in Interactive Media (interactive film/video, video games, internet, and mobile devices), Media History/Research, or Televsion Production, preference for interest in TV Sports Production but not required. Student applicants must also have a minimum 3.5 GPA in all CTVA courses and meet the University’s financial need requirements. Funds donated by Carson Schreiber, a CTVA alumnus and retired music industry executive.

Note: This is a financial needs-based scholarship that requires demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All applicants for this scholarship MUST have a FAFSA on file with the CSUN Financial Aid Office. Recipients of this scholarship will be pre-qualified by the CSUN Financial Aid Office and will NOT have their financial aid reduced unless the scholarship amount exceeds your total calculated financial need.

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing undergraduate or graduate CTVA student who has maintained a GPA of at least 3.5 in all upper-division CTVA courses, and a GPA of at least 3.0 or higher for all course work taken at CSUN. The applicant must also submit a brief (500 to 750 word) essay on the importance of the arts in society (MS-Word or PDF).

This scholarship is awarded to a CTVA junior or senior with a professional goal of a career in the media research area and at least a 3.5 GPA in all upper-division CTVA courses. Student applicants must upload a one-page composition in which you discuss why you wish to work in the field of audience research, the work you have already done in audience research, your employment goals over the next five years, and your specialization in your work at CSUN (MS-Word or PDF).

This scholarship is a merit-based award for a CTVA junior who wishes to pursue a career in the film and television industry. Applicants must have an overall 3.0 GPA or higher for all course work taken at CSUN. In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must also submit a 250-word essay describing your goals in the film or television industry and the name of a CTVA faculty member who is willing to attest to your merits for this scholarship. The CTVA Scholarship/Awards committee may take into account additional factors such as future promise, and/or other criteria as appropriate.

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing full-time Film Production Option student not graduating in the current Spring or following Fall semesters. Students must upload a brief (500 to 750 word) essay addressing the following statement: "Describe your unique leadership qualities and skills and discuss how they apply to your chosen discipline within film production" (MS-Word or PDF). Preference will be given to students displaying leadership skills. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required for all course work taken at CSUN.

Note: All applicants for this scholarship MUST also complete the online “Applicant Information Form”. Film Provisional students who have not been accepted into the Film Production Option through the portfolio process can NOT be considered for this scholarship.

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing undergraduate student who has been admitted and enrolled in the Department of CTVA in either the Film Production Option (through the portfolio process) or the Television Production Option (entering their junior or senior year in the next Fall semester). Undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN. The scholarship may be renewable for up to three (3) years for undergraduate students, provided they are making satisfactory progress toward their degree objective, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate continued financial need. Applicants must upload a brief statement discussing your qualifications as a member of a traditionally under-represented population (MS-Word or PDF). Applicants must also upload a statement of purpose regarding your anticipated role in the entertainment industry, including your potential for success. (MS-Word or PDF)

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time continuing Dept. of CTVA undergraduate student entering their junior or senior year in the following academic year. Financial need may be a consideration, although it is not a requirement. A minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN and a minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper division CTVA courses is required. This scholarship is open to all Department of CTVA undergraduate students, although preference will be given to international students. Applicants must upload a brief (500 to 750 word) essay addressing the following question: "How has the study of international media affected the way you see the world and your place in it as a media professional"?

This scholarship is awarded to a CTVA junior or senior in the Television Production Option with a 3.5 GPA (or higher) for all course work taken at CSUN. In order to be considered for this scholarship, student applicants must upload a current resume, a composition about why you wish to work in television production, employment goals over the next five years, and specialization in work at CSUN. In addition, you must submit a sample of work completed at CSUN and the names of (3) faculty member references.

One scholarship will be awarded to a CTVA major who is currently a sophomore and will enter her/his junior year in the following academic school year, and another will be awarded to a CTVA major who is currently a junior and will be entering her/his senior year in the following academic school year.  Student applicants must upload a brief (500 to 750 word) essay detailing how they have overcome obstacles caused by their social or economic status.  The essay also should detail what sort of career the applicant hopes to pursue, and how the applicant proposes to help foster diversity in the television and film arts.  A minimum 3.5 GPA for all CTVA courses and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all course work taken at CSUN are also required.

Applicants for this award must be a CTVA graduating senior, have a minimum 3.5 GPA in all upper-division CTVA courses (overall GPA for all course work taken at CSUN may also be taken into consideration), and submit a resume documenting service to the department and community, a statement of professional goals/interests, and the names of 3 references (one of whom must be a CTVA faculty member). Service to the department and the community will be a major consideration for this award. References from the "Applicant Information Form" will be used as well.

This scholarship is granted to one CTVA entering junior, and two entering CTVA seniors (based on the academic year following submission). Service to the Department and to the community will be a major consideration in granting this award. Student applicants must upload a resume that includes all pertinent professional and personal information relating in any way to service and the entertainment industry (MS-Word or PDF). A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all upper-division CTVA courses is also required.

Applicants for this scholarship must be a full-time continuing CTVA undergraduate student. Student applicants must upload a brief (500-750 word) essay detailing the role in the arts that you plan to pursue (MS-Word or PDF). Applicants for this scholarship must be a full-time continuing CTVA undergraduate student. This scholarship is awarded to a CTVA student who has demonstrated a continuing interest and participation in CTVA and/or University activities.  Student applicants must have completed at least 65 units, one year (2 semesters) of 30 units on the CSUN campus, and have at least one semester remaining to complete at CSUN (with a minimum of six units needed to graduate). Applicants must also have a minimum 3.5 GPA for all upper-division CTVA courses and upload a resume, which includes all pertinent professional and personal information relating in any way to your CTVA/University activities and the entertainment industry (MS-Word or PDF).

This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a worthy and gifted continuing student majoring in CTVA whose work embodies a clear vision of the future of the entertainment industry.  An overall 3.5 GPA or higher is required for all course work taken at CSUN. Additionally, applicants must upload or provide a Web link to a single project completed at CSUN (for example, multimedia presentation, marketing plan, critical essay, screenplay, film, television, or audio production, using one of the following file formats:

  • Video: (.mov or .mp4)

This scholarship is awarded to a CTVA junior who has blossomed at CSUN and found focus and direction through their work in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts. The intention of this scholarship is to both reward and assist a student with a monetary gift that insures that the student is able to complete their degree. Student applicants must upload a current resume (MS-Word or PDF), a 1-page statement of professional goals and interests (MS-Word or PDF), and an essay (no longer than 2 single-spaced pages) answering the following question: How has being a student in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts at CSUN helped you to find your passion and altered your focus and direction in your life and career? (MS-Word or PDF). A minimum GPA of 2.5 for all upper-division CTVA courses is also required.
