About Us

The Black Student Success Council (BSSC) will help focus campus attention on all aspects of undergraduate student recruitment, enrollment, retention, graduation and beyond, in  an effort to increase enrollment and resiliency, close the opportunity gap and increase graduation rates for students of Black/African descent.

Goals of the committee include:

  • Encourage the development of a strategic recruitment and communication plan to target schools and communities of color.
  • Work with university entities to support practices that yield increased enrollment and commitment of admitted students.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research and Division of Information Technology to identify information on the key indicators that influence campus progress in retaining and graduating students, as well as help identify why some students fail to make progress in their degree or choose not to re-enroll at CSUN.
  • Identify current academic and non-academic practices, programs, and initiatives that seek to support student persistence and graduation.
  • Advocate and support the alignment of student advisement, student support services and high impact practices to achieve the objectives of the CSU 2025 Graduation Initiative.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis on existing programs, student engagement and retention initiatives. Disseminate information related to outcomes, successes and best practices.
  • Identify institutional challenges and recommend possible solutions to university administration, as well as launch new program initiatives and delivery strategies for high-impact practices that show evidence of improving admission, retention, and graduation rates.
