SED 514Computers in Instruction Sec 7(Wed 7-10pm) - Foley Announcements Week 14. This week will will talk about writing a reflection for the Professional Teaching Portfolio that involves technology (Assignment 10). This is fairly straightforward and some people have already done it. Finally in the last week (5/18), we will learn how to put our portfolios onto a CDROM and turn them in. Here is a checklist for the portfolio.
Previous Announcements Week 13. This is the last week for new technology tools - we are working on Assignment 9 Teacher Tools. This week we will look at spreadsheets and specialized grading software (Easy Grade Pro). Then we will see how to create online assessments with www.quia.com. Finally we will explore simple things like puzzlemaker and how to make award documents (online tools, also, downloads and how to guide). Week 12.This week we are looking at computer software to use with/by students. But the web has really changed what we mean by educational software. So we have a definition. We take educational "software" is anything that the students can use which allows students to interact or express an idea. In Assignment 8 you will evaluate a piece of educational software for your subject area. Here are some software titles to get you started, but you are NOT LIMITED TO THESE:
Week 11. Warm up question on the discussion board (#18) This week we are looking for information on our teaching topics. We will look at webquests as one way to use the internet and bring rich resources into the classroom. We will also finally get to work in groups on a lesson planning project. I decided not to change the order of assignments, but for those of you who are turning in portfolios this semester, feel free to turn in #10 early (this is a PTP style artifact and write-up that involves technology) and I will give you some feedback before portfolios are due. In Assignment 7 you will search different types of resources for information for your class. Here are some useful links for completing this assignment:
Week 10. From this point on, it is no longer required that you submit assignments to the instructor (this applies to assignments 6-10). However you can still do this to get feedback on your work if you want. You submit assignments 1-5 if you have not done this already. This week we are looking at ways to find resources on the web. In Assignment 6 you will search for different types of information that will be of use to teachers. Here are some useful links for completing this assignment:
Week 8: This week we are moving on from looking at different software tools (word, photoshop etc) into looking at resources for teachers and students out on the internet. Assignment 5 focuses on issues of online communication: email, bulletin boards, chat etc. We will put these tools to use in the classroom with yahoo chat and our familiar discussion board. Next week there is no class (4/6). However Maria has generously agreed to hold an office hour from 7-8pm (regular class time) in 2119 (regular room). You should get assignments 1-5 turned in no later than friday 4/8! Week 7.We will start by taking a look at each others websites and technology survey reports. Click on the Discussion Board to look at what others have done (if you havent posted your URL do it now). What technology is available? How easy is it to use? What technologies are needed in different places? How does one get more technology for their school? On to Assignment 4 - this one should be shorter than the others (I keep saying that). To do this you also need to download the plagerism doc. The first thing you need to do with this document is to open it in Word and then turn off the spell checker. (this is in the preferences: uncheck "check spelling as you type" and "check grammar as you type"). You will soon see why you need to do this. I know I am late getting you feedback on your first 2 assignments - you should all have feedback on #1 by tomorrow and #2 by Monday. Week 6.For this week bring in picture that you want to scan.We are working on Assignment 3 - on graphics and solving problems with our websites. We will talk about the technology survey next week. Week 5. Continue working on Assignment 2 and our web pages. Assignment 2 needs to be uploaded by Friday 3/4. Here is the how-to handout. Your page needs (a) at least two pages that are linked to each other, (b) a link to some other web page not part of your site, (c) at least one image. Then start a new page to post the results of your technology survey. Look at some of the surveys from last semester. We are continuing to learn to use the u-drive. For more infromation on this go to the ITR page on web publishing. Next week is listed as a make up week, but since we are a little behind we will do Assignent 3. This is a short assignment and some people may not need much help with it. It is not required that you be in class next week if you are comfortable doing it on your own. Make sure you understand how to do it before you decide not to come! Assignment 3 needs to be uploaded by Friday 3/11. Welcome to week 4. Today we are working on making web pages - Assignment 2. We will be using the program Microsoft Front Page to edit our pages. But this program is expensive and not the greatest. A new FREE html program called NVu is available from nvu.com. If you want to work on your pages from home this is an excellent tool (Mac or Windows). BREAKING NEWS - the IT people have installed NVu in 2119 so we can use that - here is a how-to handout. To post our web pages we will use the u-drive. For more infromation on this go to the ITR page on web publishing Welcome to week 3. Make sure you can access your udrive - we will need to use it NEXT WEEK (the handout on using the udrive). If you have a problem you need to contact the helpdesk at x1400. Tell them Dr. Foley said so! This week we work on Assignment 1. Please turm this in by 2/25 (Friday next week). I will give you comments on what you need to change to get a full score and then you will turn it in for real at the end of the semester. Use the dropbox to turn in files if possible (email attachements are OK also). Also continue to work on the technology survey. Instructions on the survey are on the handout. You need to survey the tech in your class before Feb 23 (next week!). Welcome to week 2. You should have gotten an email from the instructor today (Wednesday). If you did not get it you need to check your email forwarding (go to the account page). We are moving forward this week to look generally about technology use in classrooms. This week we have a reading and we are beginning our technology survey. Instructions on the survey are on the handout. You need to survey the tech in your class before Feb 23 (two weeks!). If you are not currently teaching you need to identify some other classroom that you can survey. Ask the instructor if you need help finding a good class. We will start on the regular assignments next week. |
