Music Preview: CÉCILE MCLORIN SALVANT (The Soraya and Irvine Barclay)
Hooray and hallelujah! Long before her newest disc, Dreams and Daggers — a live double-CD set that won the 2018 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album — I have always been a fan of jazz vocalist and song interpreter extraordinaire Cécile McLorin Salvant. But seeing her live at the Broad in Santa Monica earlier this month has not only cemented my opinion that this is the most exciting thing in all music — not just jazz — to come along in decades. She is this generation’s most mesmerizing, fascinating, and supreme songstress. Yes, she has that remarkably distinctive voice, but it’s supported by a personality which is an amalgam of combinations: old soul/young upstart; waggish/serious; and controlled/improvisational. On April 18 and 19 (at The Soraya in Northridge) and April 20 (at Irvine Barclay), you will get a rare opportunity to see her before she sets out on a globetrotting tour. She will restore your faith in original singer/songwriters who value great songs and storytelling. -- Stage and Cinema
RESEARCH & COMMENTARY: EXPANDING THE ROLE OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS WILL HELP SOLVE DOCTOR SHORTAGE
Shirley Svorny of California State University at Northridge and the Cato Institute argued in a 2008 paper that the current licensing system for physicians serves to benefit incumbent clinicians instead of consumers, and that the health care market would be better served by eliminating professional licensing. “Licensure not only fails to protect consumers from incompetent physicians, but, by raising barriers to entry, makes health care more expensive and less accessible,” Svorny wrote. -- The Heartland Institute

‘Now I Am a Builder’: Sanderson Reflects on How Federation Has Changed Him
Sanderson made it a priority to address Jewish life on college campuses, leading Federation into a new relationship with Hillel. The partnership infused major sparks of Jewish life into three San Fernando Valley campuses: Cal State Northridge, Pierce College and Valley College. Twice as many Jewish students attend those colleges as USC and UCLA, he said. -- Jewish Journal
Your Comprehensive Guide to Finding the Perfect Blush
The key to blush is knowing your undertones. Finding your undertone is super easy: just look at your wrist and look closely at your veins. If your veins appear blue, you’re a cool undertone. That means your skin tends to have more pink or blue tones. Briana, a makeup artist at Ulta, suggests a blush that is nude for your skin color. She says to stay away from most pink shades because they’ll make your skin look extra pink. Maci Garcia, a sophomore from Cal State Northridge, says “I use the blush from the ELF contouring blush and bronzing powder duo! I wear it because it’s affordable and a friend recommended it. I really like the way it looks on me.” This blush is great for cool undertones because it isn’t too pink and will wear very naturally. -- Her Campus
