SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care and the Lunar New Year of the Dragon

This Saturday, we enter a new Lunar Year, the Year of the Dragon. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a symbol of strength and power and is associated with good fortune, wisdom, success, and protection. 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon – a year of transformation, growth, and abundance. According to Chinese legend, vibrant Yang Wood energy in this year needs to be balanced with inner harmony practices, such as meditation, to maintain self-care and health for us all. Now is also an auspicious time to be aware of culturally informed self-care resources for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Read more

February is Black History Month, a time to renew our commitment to antiracist work as an act of self-care for ourselves and our Black community. A great way to celebrate Black History Month is to engage in various activities that celebrate African American history and culture. CSUN will be offering numerous events with the theme "African Americans in the Arts" celebrating Black excellence and the arts. Read more

Self-care in times of uncertainty

This week our college faces uncertainty as we wait to hear how the semester will move forward. This is not an easy time for any of us. Research shows that uncertainty can cause massive stress. An article in the American Psychological Association Journal is titled “The great unknown: 10 tips for dealing with the stress of uncertainty” and offers strategies to help us deal with stress during uncertain times. Self-care and Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This week we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reaffirm our ongoing commitment to racial and social justice as a form of self-care. As stated by the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Healthy Minds Innovations (HMI) Center, “For many, this holiday is spent as a day of reflection and service, honoring King’s anti-racist, non-violent work in a time of an unprecedented social reckoning and increased violence across the nation.” Read more
