Accessibility Testing for ePubs: No Experience Necessary

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 16, 2022 - 1:20 PM PST
Location
Platinum 9-10
Description
Accessibility is becoming an extremely important consideration for digital publishers both inside and outside of higher education. Faculty and other curators have a vested interest in making sure the materials they require or suggest are accessible to all of their students. At the present moment, however, the process of testing and remediating an ePub for accessibility requires a fair amount of technical knowledge.  A variety of open source tools exist today that can greatly cut back on the level of manual effort required; however, many of these tools are geared toward technical people. The tools identify problems in a way that makes perfect sense to someone with an inside knowledge of WCAG and other technical language associated with accessibility—but they don’t really say much that would help someone who just wants to know what needs to be fixed. Moreover, a lot of accessibility concerns are spread across multiple tools, so users looking to test their ePubs will need to run them through multiple processes. Challenges like these turn the process of testing an ePub—and starting a conversation about accessibility—into a daunting task for people who aren’t already knowledgeable on the subject. Logictran is a leading developer of ePub publishing tools, with more than two decades of experience building software for some of the largest Education Technology companies in the world. Logictran’s software solution aims to alleviate these pain points and empower people from all areas of higher education and beyond to test and remediate their ePubs for accessibility. Our software is an easy-to-use, browser-based tool that takes in ePubs and uses both industry standard open source tests and Logictran’s proprietary tests to analyze accessibility and provide suggestions and solutions in clear language. Our goal is to make ePub evaluation and remediation as simple as possible with a minimum of experience.
