Technology and Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities

A panel of experts will discuss emerging hazards, new communication technologies and maximizing wireless device readiness (cell, smart phones and tablets). Explore Apps, cloud storage, social media readiness, alternative power options for essential communication and independence, and other key preparedness issues for people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. This interactive session will include ample time for audience participation.

The U.S. Access Board – Public Hearing

The Board conducted a public hearing January 11 on a revised draft of updated requirements for information and communication technology (ICT) covered by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act. The next Public Hearing on the Draft ICT Rule will be held at the CSUN Conference and is open to the public as well as conference attendees.

Panel Discussion on Accessibility of U.S. Transportation System

Accessible transportation is vital in maintaining independence and mobility for people with disabilities; it plays a major role in helping this important segment of the population enter into and remain in the mainstream of society. A panel of experts from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Amtrak will discuss the rights of people with disabilities when in transport on the ground, by train, in the air, or on water, and the importance of designing a livable and accessible community. This session will also include a discussion of recent DOT rulemaking, enforcement and outreach activities to make our travel system more fully accessible as well as a discussion and a video presentation on evacuating people with disabilities during emergencies.

Accessible information and communication technology (ICT) is essential to advancing the employment of people with disabilities. During this featured presentation, Ms. Martinez will update attendees on her agency's current and future efforts to promote interoperable, usable and universally designed ICT through strategic partnerships, education and outreach.

We are excited to announce that Project Possibility's SS12: Code for a Cause Finals will once again be held at this year's CSUN Conference. Sponsored by Microsoft, this exciting event will host the innovative open source projects developed by the top teams from CSUN, UCLA and USC. Mark your calendars for this occasion where the 2012 SS12 Champions will be announced following the presentations and judging portion. A Continental Breakfast will be served following the presentations during the judging portion of the program.

The SS12: Code for a Cause is a weekend long code-a-thon were students take project ideas proposed by persons with disabilities and turn them into free open source software. The SS12: Code for a Cause is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate software developers to make a profound difference by developing innovative, empowering software projects for persons with disabilities and win prizes for their work. The purpose of SS12: Code for a Cause is to increase awareness of issues in accessible computing and be educational and fun for all participants.
