Let's Cook and Move: Grant Supports Fitness and Nutrition Education in Schools

Did you know that less than 20 percent of Kindergarten through 12th grade schools nationwide include fitness activities in the school day--or even before and after school? With childhood obesity at epidemic levels and increasing diagnoses of type 2 diabetes among children, CSUN faculty and students are reaching out to create a healthier community.

A grant from Northridge Hospital Medical Center along with the hospital’s School Based Obesity and Diabetes Initiative (SODI) and partnership with the Valley Care Community Consortium (VCCC) is helping CSUN faculty and students from the departments of Kinesiology and Family and Consumer Sciences design and administer a new program for kids, Let’s Cook and Move! Success is in Bloom: EBS Scholar

Aleksandra Milosevic

Aleksandra Milosevic is a graduate student in Speech Pathology at CSUN and one of four recipients of the EBS (Educational Based Services) Healthcare Scholarship. A community partner with CSUN, EBS is the largest provider of specialized health care services to the pediatric population. Aleksandra always wanted to work with children, and more recently realized Speech-Language Pathology was the way she could help the most. The EBS Scholarship, with two years employment as part of the contract, was just what she hoped for. Learn more about her experience at CSUN and how the EBS scholarship is helping shape her future. The Janovicis' Gift to the Center of Achievement

Bob and Sue Janovici

On the morning of January 26, 2005, Bob Janovici was riding the Metrolink from his Northridge home to work in downtown L.A. when an abandoned SUV on the tracks caused a major derailment of the train. There were 11 fatalities, and Bob was in a coma with a broken neck and a severe brain injury.

Doctors told his wife, Sue, that Bob had only a one percent chance of regaining consciousness. He awoke. He then began the slow process of recovery. After a year of therapy, Bob was referred to the Center of Achievement (Kinesiology) where he exercises regularly and he and Sue are finding community. Read more
