Digital Accessibility in Directed Labor Applications

Description
Most digital accessibility conversations cover web experiences where a user is navigating through an interface to complete a goal, such as an online shopping experience, email client or a project management tool. Landmarks, headings, and structure guidance from best practices support the discretionary use of these web tools. However, in a nonoffice work setting, like an inventory picker, or packaging orders into boxes, a user follows directions and prompts from the application to execute the manual work. In these cases, the workers performance is often measured on how many items they can pick, or orders they can box. The nature of the human-application interaction is foundationally different than one which is user directed. To make a computer driven application accessible requires extra evaluation on the application and all contributing factors to the overall task begin completed. The surroundings may not be a quiet space and the primary input devices may not be a keyboard or keyboard alternative. What is possible when accessibility means all workers can perform at the same efficiency? Changing your team’s implementation of accessibility best practices when the application is not a user directed experience can increase nonoffice work opportunities for people with disabilities. Investigate how structure and typical best practices can become the barriers they were designed to prevent and why devices and applications demand cohesion to make warehouse technology accessible.
