At D2L, we build educational experiences. To us, inclusive design means that we are mindful of the needs of all our users, particularly users with disabilities. Our goal is to ensure that no learner, instructor, or administrator gets left behind and the products that we build are accessible and enhance their experience. To successfully deliver accessible experiences, we bring that mindfulness to the entire product development lifecycle.
I will share how accessibility is woven into our process in building digital products for education. This includes how we bring a variety of inputs at the various stages of our process from our clients to identify institutional needs, our internal SMEs, QA testing, and our end users through user research. While we recognize the WCAG as a powerful resource, we believe it is a baseline for us to approach our solutions and for us to build accessible experiences that meet our users' needs, we need all those inputs to get it right.
Our process aims to go beyond usability and ensure that our products are positive experiences for those using them. From early conception of a product or feature to its delivery, we identify and learn what barriers are there around accessibility for our users and those insights shape our solution. We have a system to include users with disabilities anywhere in the process as needed. This approach ensures that accessibility is not a single stitch in our process but threaded throughout that lifecycle at each stage.
