Designing with Mental Health in Mind

Date & Time
Thursday, March 16, 2023 - 10:20 AM PST
Location
Orange County 3-4
Description
Two accessibility professionals with primary mental health disabilities will share insights to the challenges posed by mental health disabilities and how to create accessible designs with these issues in mind. Some challenges stemming from mental health disabilities include organization, time keeping, panic or anxiety triggers and cognitive overload. Keeping designs simple and intuitive reduce issues with cognitive overload and anxiety triggers. When requiring a user to complete an action with a specific time limit provide easily accessible extensions. If at all possible, remove the time requirements as this benefits multiple groups of users. Provide multiple reminders for scheduled events. Providing these reminders makes it less likely a user will get distracted and miss important scheduled events. How can we design to avoid common panic and anxiety triggers while providing meaningful access to the same information? Graphics and text descriptions of a graphic and disturbing nature are often integral to sharing the news of today and historical accounts. People with strong adverse reactions to certain topics should be given simple warnings of the content within so as to not accidentally trigger panic, anxiety or depressive symptoms. Providing general descriptors such as Trigger Warning *Suicide, *Sexual Assault *Serious Injuries etc. can help the user quickly and safely navigate away from or around the triggering content.
