Educators' Assessment for Assistive Technology Needs (AATN)

Description

Special educators need to develop a clear understanding of universal design for learning (UDL) to address access to learning and how educational technology (ET) can support the realization of the UDL. Thus, special educators should be able to clearly distinguish between the principles of UDL and students’ needs for assistive technology (AT). Determining students’ need for AT in special education involves a comprehensive evaluation process by a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Special educators should be able to assess the needs of students for AT devices and services and their effects on students’ educational benefits. We introduce an online-based screen tool that can assist special education teachers in assessing Assistive Technology Needs for students with disabilities. Assessment for Assistive Technology Needs (AATN) was developed to assist special education teachers in decision-making for Assistive Technology (AT) needs of students with disabilities. Special education teachers can use AATN to determine whether the target student’s needs can be met by the universal digital tools or require further evaluation processes for specialized AT devices or services. Following the AT Consideration Resource Guide (Georgia Project for Assistive Technology [GPAT], 2004), this AATN measures 11 domains (e.g., academic tasks, communications, aids to daily living, etc.) and provides over 100 specific tasks/scenarios for special educators to select.
