Access Denied: Implications of Unequal Access to Technology

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Orange County 1-2
Description
Access to assistive technology plays a key role in allowing individuals with disabilities to work, live, and play in their community. Therefore, Center for independent living and university staff play a vital role in overcoming attitudinal barriers, identifying the correct assistive technology, finding funding, and advocating for needed training. When people with disabilities are denied access to assistive technology, it leads to increased outcomes of unemployment, not pursuing education, isolation, and reliance on others to perform tasks. The Assistive Technology Affordability Act, expanding existing assistive technology programs, and introducing assistive technology at an earlier age are just a few of the tools needed to turn the tide towards granting access for individuals with disabilities.
