Customizing Accessibility Service Delivery

Description
Since accessibility services needed by product teams vary greatly depending on the project phase, team skillset, and go-to-market strategy, we have devised an approach to customize accessibility service delivery based on these criteria. We advocate a shift-left strategy to integrate accessibility throughout the product development process and this includes embedding accessibility resources in the project team. When embedded, the accessibility resource conducts in-sprint testing, reviews UX designs, creates user stories, and provides guidance to UX designers, front end developers, testers, and product owners at the appropriate phases to ensure accessible product delivery. When requested to perform accessibility audits, the audit is tailored based on phase, delivery timeline, and budget and we offer three types of audits – accessibility basic check, mini-audit, and full audit. We have created a bespoke testing methodology using the Trusted Tester methodology as the starting point but enhanced it to cover test cases related to screen readers, code scanners, contrast checkers, and other testing tools. To make accessibility easily actionable to front end developers and UX designers, we aggregated all WCAG A and AA criteria and created 12 high-level accessibility non-functional requirements. We have also developed an in-house automation tool that leverages open-source tools, performs screen reader automation, and improves our testing efficiency.
