Taptilo K: Braille Learning Keyboard with Educational App

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 3:20 PM PST
Location
Orange County 1-2
Description
The presentation will introduce Taptilo K and its efficiency through a pilot project's result to teachers and organization officials. Taptilo K is a Perkins-styled keyboard that is affordable and efficient for the blind and visually impaired. OHFA Tech investigated a big gap in braille writing: the traditional writing method, and the braille notetaker. Students need to stick to the traditional braille writing method before getting the braille notetakers. To fill the gap, Taptilo K has been developed. The Taptilo app could be connected with Taptilo K via Bluetooth. When the students or the teachers tap the content on the screen, the Taptilo app will read the word. The students can type it and check the answer by themselves. The app provides customized lessons so anyone can create a list so that personalized learning is available. Taptilo K will be developed as a braille keyboard so anyone can type braille and create a digital document. The documents made by Taptilo K will be able to be printed, shared through the app, or translated into printed letters. Taptilo K is now on the pilot project that has proceeded in Jakarta, Indonesia with the public school for the blind. The project is provided by KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency). Students proceed with braille learning with Taptilo K and the app. After the class, the assignments are given via the app so the learning progress will be checked every month. The result gathered through 12 weeks also will be shown.
