Align WCAG to Organizational Roles to Achieve Accessibility

Description

Accessibility policies help document and align an organization’s commitment to accessible content and helps all team members understand the company’s accessibility goals and milestones. However, organizations commonly face a few problems. First, the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) can be vague and complex. Second, WCAG is primarily developer focused and doesn’t provide enough details for designers and QA teams. Therefore, solving these problems involves two steps: 1) Creating a common set of objective requirements for each WCAG Success Criteria. 2) Identify the unique roles that wireframe designers, copy authors, programmers, and testers within the organization each play to accomplish those requirements. This presentation will review some compelling benefits to this approach. Knowing what is required for each role that is part of the web content lifecycle also allows for organizations to provide more effective and targeted training…at less cost! Each team member in the lifecycle is now also accountable for their piece of the puzzle and if a piece is missing, team members will know where to look to obtain those details instead of making assumptions or even worse…doing nothing!
