A 4 Part Exercise to Understand Inclusivity in the Classroom

Date & Time
Friday, March 17, 2023 - 11:20 AM PST
Location
Orange County 1-2
Description
Educational institutions today are not only being asked to be accessible but inclusive. With the sudden dramatic switch to virtual learning in early 2020, support systems that students had in with in-person learning were no longer available in the same way. The intent of this session is to provide a space for students, instructors, administrators, and others to discuss the challenges of and solutions for teaching in an inclusive virtual learning environment. Participants will take part in four exercises that demonstrate the experiences of cognitive, visual, motor, and hearing impaired students in virtual learning environments. From the experiences that participants have during the exercises, they will be encouraged to discuss impacts on other student groups when, for example, a time limit is set on a test. At the end of each exercise, suggestions for improving the student experience will be provided. Participants will be invited to add their own suggestions and stories with the goal of increasing the number of solutions available to the entire group.
