From Accessibility Checks to Design Partnership

The University of Washington has collaborated with many software companies to help them to incorporate accessibility in their development process. In this session, UW accessibility experts will share their journeys to accessibility of Workday, ServiceNow, Zoom and how they incorporated accessibility throughout their development processes. Many companies are trying hard to make more accessible software, however their designers and developers rarely have formal education and training in accessibility principles. Companies typically have well-established processes for software design and development, but lack a cohesive approach to ensuring accessibility for their products essential workflows. Incorporating non-familiar accessibility concepts in the software development process can be a challenge for companies that lack this experience. While all companies have their own software development processes, they are unique in their approaches and these can’t be easily copied from one company to another. There are, however, commonalities that can be used to help companies develop their own recipe for accessibility success. Most of these companies have separate design, developer and QA/QE teams and while there is often some communication between these teams, we often observe that there is no effective communication between them regarding accessibility. This can produce islands of accessibility but neglects to provide a homogenous functional accessibility throughout the product.
