We developed a 90-minute interactive web-based multiplayer game for all our 350,000+ people across 150+ countries. The game required teams to travel by a virtual elevator and complete interactive quizzes, participate in discussions, and score points for the leader board. By deploying a shift-left strategy, accessibility was factored as a non-negotiable requirement into all stages of the game development process including planning, concepting, design, front end development, testing, and release. WCAG criteria were mapped against the scope of the game play and of particular importance were requirements related to keyboard access, semantics, color contrast, captioning, audio descriptions, timed events, forms, and page titles. The developers evaluated the technology stack for optimal accessibility including accessibility API mappings, user agent behavior, and assistive technologies adaptation. Iterative game design sessions were conducted with the UX design team and developers utilized specific HTML, CSS, and ARIA elements to optimize accessibility. They also ensured the usage of accessible media players, and provided easy access to closed captions, audio descriptions, and microphone hints. We used an enhanced Trusted Tester methodology to test and report accessibility bugs, and leveraged the report for remediation tracking. By fully embedding accessibility we were able to successfully deliver an inclusive enterprise gaming experience.
