Deploying Managers as Advocates of Accessible Content

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 2:20 PM PST
Location
Platinum 7-8
Description
Digital accessibility teams in large enterprises often struggle with how to deploy their limited resources. How can such teams improve the accessibility of all enterprise content when it seems impossible to even identify everyone who is creating content? Rather than focus at the individual employee level, The Digital Accessibility Team at Kent State University chose to methodically interview the supervisors of content-creating teams to understand their workflows and develop curated but low-maintenance training and new standard operating procedures. When managers become the key point of contact to the Digital Accessibility team, it extends the principle of accessibility being every employee’s responsibility and frees accessibility specialists to focus on higher quality training of fewer people. Through the manager’s involvement, the accessibility information and best practices become team-specific and have immediate application, increasing employee engagement. This process establishes mid-level managers as accessibility advocates, modeling and expecting the inclusion of accessibility practices in all stages of content creation. Kent State’s Digital Accessibility team will show how they provided pre-recorded trainings then coached managers on practice sessions and team standards. This process is universally effective with webmasters, marketers, social media creators, educational/library resource material curators, and digital graphic designers.
