38th Annual CSUN Assistive Technology Conference Has Concluded
Do-It-Yourself AT: 3D Printing and Other Maker Solutions
- Date & Time
-
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 2:20 PM PST
- Location
-
Elite 1-3
- Description
-
The emergence of affordable fabrication technology (3D printers) enables low cost and custom solutions to be made to address the particular needs of people with disabilities.
Integrating 3D design and other maker technologies, such as micro controllers or hardware store supplies, can enable many solutions to be quickly and affordably made.
The session will explore repositories of 3D printed solutions and communities of practice that support 3D printing to address health, medical, and occupational therapy issues. Attendees will be able to consider possible innovations, opportunities, and risks when bringing 3D printed assistive technologies into occupational therapy practices.
In the session, participants will be walked through how to download a 3D printing file, how to prepare it for printing, and how to load it onto a 3D printer. Assuming the session is face-to-face, a 3D printer will be in the session so participants can see how it works and “demystify” the technology. At the session, there will be numerous 3D printed aids on hand, that participants will be able to look through to raise their awareness of available solutions that can be affordably made.
AT Professionals will be aware of repositories of openly available accommodations, best practices when considering 3D printed accommodations, as well as how to contribute and apply their professional knowledge to provide informed input into the development of these emerging technologies.
