Accommodating Hidden Disabilities with AT
- Date & Time
- Friday, March 17, 2023 - 4:20 PM PST
- Location
- Elite 1-3
- Description
-
Hidden disabilities are medical conditions that are not noticeable or identifiable at first glance and may include autoimmune disorders, mental health conditions, and organ system dysfunction. Employers often question the value of accommodating employees with hidden disabilities.
Employees with hidden disabilities who request accommodations should be treated with the same respect and due diligence as those with apparent disabilities. Approaching the interactive process objectively leads to effective accommodation outcomes by clarifying employee needs while maintaining employer requirements.
While selecting accommodations, tools, and strategies that the individual has successfully and comfortably used previously may serve as a starting point, engaging resources to enhance the interactive process may generate additional options and optimize effective outcomes.
Presenters will discuss case study examples that implement a range of mainstream and traditional assistive technologies as well as resources to assist with navigating the interactive process. Cost benefit data will be provided as available.
Effective assistive technology (AT) accommodations benefit employees with hidden disabilities by promoting equity and inclusion while maximizing productivity, morale, and workplace safety. A robust interactive process allows consideration of a range of accommodation options and balances individual preferences with employer priorities to optimize effectiveness.
