When you hear Artificial Intelligence (AI), your mind goes one of two ways: either Sci-Fi, or really complicated technology. We don’t realize it, but AI already plays a big role in our everyday lives. AI influences our lives, sometimes for the better (getting good recommendations on Netflix based on our viewing history, for example) and sometimes, the worse (targeted ads when navigating the Internet).
At Humanware, we saw the potential for AI to help in the world of Orientation & Mobility and asked ourselves, how can we use technology to makes the lives easier for our users? The final forty feet was an easy answer. We all know that GPS and maps are never 100% accurate. Sometimes, the GPS will make you stop a door short, or too far from your intended destination. A sighted person can easily confirm if they’re in the right place. But for a blind person, it can lead to knocking on the wrong door.
HumanWare StellarTrek is the perfect example of AI technology at its best, assisting the user to confirm he or she is at the correct destination by detecting doors and addresses. GPS coordinates, cameras, Wi-Fi connections are all used in conjunction to return the most accurate information, from confirming the address and doors to OCR results, back to the user.
And it’s only the beginning! With AI, it opens up the door to a slew of potential features, such as crosswalk detection, currency recognition, and beyond!
