A-B-C’s, 1-2-3’s for Learners with Low Vision

Date & Time
Thursday, March 16, 2023 - 1:20 PM PST
Location
Grand AB
Description
Join this presentation to learn how to accommodate, support, and include students with low vision to ensure their academic success across all educational subject areas using the Connect 12 portable magnifier from HumanWare. In this session, through demonstration and discussion, the presenters will start from the ground up with a discussion about customization of the user interface (and experience) based on a user’s age, academic skill, technical capability, and level of disability. From this basis, the discussion will evolve to tools that can support the learner across the curriculum, from basic reading, writing, and math to higher levels of STEM and research. In addition, attention will be given to specific low vision supports delivered by Connect 12’s Prodigi software and online productivity tools like the Google Suite, Microsoft Teams, and other applications that can help learners of all ages. Throughout, participants will engage in a discussion of how the available features and tools can be used flexibly to meet a variety of learner needs, in addition to supporting remote or distance learning. While supporting individuals holistically with any assistive device will never be as easy as A-B-C or 1-2-3, this presentation will highlight how it is possible to support learning wherever it needs to happen and to include everyone in a manner that respects their individual needs.
