The UDL Practicum: Impactfully Addressing Evolving Needs

Date & Time

Location

Description
The past few years have brought significant change and challenges for both students and instructors. Students have experienced new barriers to learning along with different impacts of previously existing barriers. In this new normal, instructors are continuing to adjust to the challenge of offering more inclusive, accessible, and flexible learning opportunities. To help faculty adjust to these changing times, Northwestern created the Universal Design for Learning Practicum. This practicum, attended by over 300 faculty, focused on practical implementation of the three UDL principles multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. The topic was one of interest, but the unique structure which weaved together interactive synchronous sessions, asynchronous learning activities, individual consultations, and opportunities to learn with and from peers is what made this a transformational learning experience for faculty. The practicum was a collaborative effort of over 60 people and ten different units on campus. This session will lay a roadmap for other higher education institutions to follow to successfully implement UDL/accessibility initiatives. The session will focus on how partnerships were developed and fostered to create the practicum, the planning of both the structure and the content of the practicum, the practicum’s execution, and the results both in faculty learning and the impact it has had on students in classes across campus.
