How to Teach Compassion With Assistive Technology

Date & Time
Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 10:20 AM PST
Location
Grand AB
Description
Compassion is a basis for assistive technology. It is the desire to relieve someone else’s distress, create greater independence and better quality of life for the user. Assistive technology can also be used to create and promote compassion in others. Examples of this are: 1. Three legal cases of service dog access denial in two hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. One case, a landmark decision, is the precedent for future service dog access denial cases. The cases created awareness and understanding of service dogs, the tasks they perform, with implications to ensure the rights of service dog recipients. 2. The invention of a therapeutic board game for psychiatric inpatients presents therapists with a tool to increase mental health. The game has interventions to help patients learn about themselves and others. Greater awareness and understanding of each other and their problems creates greater empathy and compassion. 3. Three educational programs teaching students design thinking while inventing something to meet the needs of an individual with a disability are Project Invent, Design the Future, and Stanford University’s, “Perspectives in Assistive Technology.” The students learn about the challenges of an individual with a disability. Creativity of the the community partner present opportunities to teach compassion. From personally experiencing aspects of the life of an individual with a disability, students gain a greater understanding and compassion for other people.
